A second-hand piece can be a useful find when its condition, dimensions and collection arrangements are clear. Ask for current photos and inspect the details that affect safe everyday use.
Check structure and movement
Look for loose joints, wobble, cracks, missing fasteners and uneven legs. For drawers, doors and recliners, ask to see each mechanism opened and closed. If possible, inspect the underside and back as well as the front.
Look closely at surfaces and upholstery
Ask about stains, odours, fading, repairs and any exposure to moisture or pests. Check seams, cushion zips and hidden areas. For wood or metal, look for corrosion, lifting veneer, peeling finish or repairs that need attention.
Confirm practical details
Request exact dimensions and compare them with your room and delivery route. Agree on collection or delivery arrangements, who will carry the item, what is included and when payment is due. Ask the seller to describe any known faults in writing.
Condition varies from one item to another. Make the decision from the specific item’s photos and inspection, and clarify any questions with the seller before committing.
