A sofa can look right in a showroom and still feel too large once it reaches home. Measure the room, the route into it and the sofa itself before choosing a size.

Start with the room

Measure the wall or area where the sofa will sit. Note nearby doors, windows, radiators, outlets and the path people use to cross the room. Mark the sofa’s approximate footprint on the floor with masking tape or paper so you can judge its scale before buying.

Measure the delivery route

Check the width and height of the entrance, hallway, stair turns and lift. Measure narrow points with doors open and consider whether the sofa legs or cushions can be removed. Ask the seller for the overall width, height, depth and any packed dimensions they can provide.

Check how it will feel

Overall dimensions do not tell the whole story. Seat depth, back height and arm width affect comfort and how much room remains for a side table or walkway. Compare those details with a sofa you already find comfortable.

Before checkout, confirm delivery access, assembly needs, lead time and the seller’s return terms. Keep the measurements together so you can compare options fairly.
