THE TARTEEBHOME GUIDES
Choose upholstery around use and care, then confirm the exact fabric and cushion construction supplied.
Separate covering from construction
The upholstery name describes only part of the piece. Ask about the fabric composition, backing, cushion filling, support and frame separately. A velvet-like appearance does not identify fibre content. Request a fabric code or sample if available, and clarify which parts of the product use it. Decorative cushions may use another covering or may not be included.
Judge colour and texture carefully
Screen settings, lighting and fabric direction can change how a colour appears. Compare a sample in your room during daylight and evening lighting where practical. Consider how the texture feels and whether a visible weave or pile will suit daily use. If matching several pieces, ask about batch consistency. Do not assume two products called beige or charcoal use the same fabric.
Make care part of the choice
Ask for the supplied cleaning instructions and any restrictions before choosing. Removable covers are not automatically machine washable; zips may exist only for manufacturing access. Avoid generic cleaning chemicals on an unknown textile or finish. Blot spills without rubbing while following the manufacturer’s instructions. For stains or damage, seek advice appropriate to the actual fabric rather than trying a treatment from appearance alone.
Clarify performance claims
If a seller states a durability, stain-resistance or other performance claim, ask what evidence and test method support it and whether it covers the supplied fabric. These claims do not remove the need for care. Consider pets, children, sunlight and how frequently the piece will be used. Confirm replacement covers, repairs and warranty terms only where offered in writing. A premium description is not a substitute for a specification.
