Storage Planning: Measure What You Need to Put Away

THE TARTEEBHOME GUIDES

Start with the contents and how you access them. External furniture dimensions tell only part of the story.

Inventory the contents

Group belongings by size, frequency of use and where they are used. Measure the largest objects and the combined height of a realistic stack. Separate items needing ventilation or special handling. Decide what belongs in the room before buying more storage. A cabinet can be large outside but have a narrow opening, shallow shelves or unusable corners inside.

Compare usable capacity

Ask for internal shelf and drawer dimensions, door-opening width and adjustable shelf positions. Check the stated load limits for shelves and fixings. For shoes, allow for actual footwear sizes; for files or books, measure the objects rather than assuming standard capacity. Include handles, hinges and cable openings where relevant. Storage divided into many small compartments may be less flexible than it appears.

Choose the access pattern

Open shelving keeps frequently used objects visible but requires dusting and can look busy. Closed doors conceal contents but need clearance. Drawers make lower storage easier to reach, while tall furniture may need a safe way to access upper shelves. Check the room with doors and drawers open. Keep everyday routes and essential fixtures clear, and avoid a plan that requires shifting heavy furniture to reach belongings.

Plan installation and change

Follow the manufacturer’s instructions for assembly and anchoring. Confirm wall suitability and required hardware with a competent installer; generic supplied fixings may not suit every wall. Measure access for the package as well as the assembled cabinet. Choose adjustable or modular layouts where actual product options support them. Keep the supplier’s load and care instructions so storage remains useful as contents change.

Your comparison checklist
